Backyard Springtime Safety

We’ve already sprung forward with the time change – and now we’re poised to spring into a brand new season. And that means many of us are going to be spending more time in the backyard – working as well as relaxing. How can you make your backyard a safer place?

  • Remember the sunblock! Whether you’re swimming in the pool, enjoying a book while lounging in a deck chair, or pruning the roses, wear sunscreen (at least SPF 30) – and apply regularly. Sunglasses, a hat, and protective clothing can also help prevent excessive sun exposure.
  • Make sure your fire pit, fireplace, or tiki torches are safe. Keep fires at least 10 feet – ideally 25 feet – away from any structure. And be sure to check the weather forecast before lighting a fire; if it’s going to be breezy, consider saving the fire for another day.
  • Check your patio! Wooden decks and patios are vulnerable to water damage – which causes rotted and warped boards. Brick or stone patios also require maintenance; missing grout or broken tiles can be tripping hazards. Do a thorough inspection of your deck or patio, and make sure repairs are taken care of before the structure is being heavily used.
  • Practice pool safety. When friends and neighbors visit, ensure everyone understands the rules for safe enjoyment of the pool (for instance – no running on cement wet from splashing). And be sure there is always at least one adult supervising children and young people using the pool.
  • If you have a playset in the backyard, be sure you make time for an inspection and do any necessary maintenance before the kids start playing on it this season. Check for insect nests in the playset’s pipes, look for rotten wood, test for bad bolts – and take care of the needed remediation promptly.
  • Keep lawn and garden products, and lawn mowers and garden tools, out of reach of pets and children. And be sure pet and kids are indoors when you are treating your lawn or garden with herbicides or pesticides.
  • Invest in security. A good lighting system can make your backyard a safer place at night – and discourage criminals. A camera or security system can help protect your family and property, too.
