All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

Winterize Your Motorcycle

Whether you’re in a state where temperatures dip before freezing, or you’re in a more sunshiney state, this is an important time of year to take steps for the health and long life of your motorcycle.

Fluctuating temperatures, cold weather, and moisture can damage your bike – think rust, engine damage, and battery failure, among other potential problems. Preventive steps are the key to preventing any and all of these issues.

  • Step one: clean your motorcycle thoroughly to remove the dirt of the road and any debris that may have gathered or gotten caught. Make sure you take a close look at areas of your bike prone to rust, like the undercarriage and chain. The important follow-up step: dry your bike thoroughly! And consider applying wax to protect the chrome and paint.
  • To prevent drainage of your battery, disconnect it and store in a cool, dry place. You may want to consider using a trickle charger or battery tender to help maintain the charge during storage.
  • Seal air intakes and exhaust pipes to keep out moisture … and pests. (Use plastic bags or exhaust plugs designed for motorcycles.)

Some of these next steps may surprise you, since you’re planning on tucking your bike away for a few months!

  • It’s recommended that you change the oil and filter, and also fill the gas tank – adding a fuel stabilizer to prevent the gas from deteriorating. (Run the engine a few minutes after adding the stabilizer to get it circulating through the system.)
  • Inflate your tires to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure, and consider using a motorcycle stand to lift the bike of the ground. If that’s not possible, then rotate the tires occasionally while the bike is in storage.
  • Ensure antifreeze levels are adequate to prevent freezing if your bike uses liquid cooling.
  • Lubricate any moving parts (chain, pivot points, cables) to prevent rust.
  • Inspect the belt drive, keeping an eye out for fraying, cuts, chips, or missing teeth.
  • Once your bike is ready for some time off, cover it – a good motorcycle cover that fits your bike would be best -- and be sure you store it indoors. Try to store it in a location that’s well ventilated (so moisture won’t collect under your cover).

This is also a great time of year to review your motorcycle policy and ensure that you have sufficient coverage! Got questions? Just reach out to use – we can help.
