Happy Back to School Month!
As you prepare your kids to hit the books for another year, you also need to prepare yourself—and your household—for changing gears.
For instance, it helps everyone if the kids are accustomed to the right getting-up-time in the morning, so they don’t have to rush or worry about being late. You may want to start a week or so before the first day of school, helping your kids get to bed earlier and get up earlier, so those first few days of classes won’t feel so difficult.
Talk about your kids’ getting-ready patterns. Would laying out their clothes the night before be a time-saver in the morning? Do they have options for quick-and-easy breakfasts?
Establish a quiet place in your home where the kids can do their homework—and while you’re at it, establish a homework time so they can get in a healthy rhythm right away.
Back-to-school shopping is an annual tradition! But as you explore different backpack or schoolbag options, remember to keep size and weight in mind. Your child’s bookbag should not weigh more than 10-20% of his or her body weight—and a bigger bag could make it tougher to keep that limitation in mind.
Remember to ready yourself for the change in your schedule, too, especially if you drive the kids to school or participate in a car pool. If time is tighter in the morning, can you shift any tasks to the night before? Search for some healthy, take-along breakfast recipes that can keep you on the go without taking a big bite out of your schedule.
And, of course, be extra careful behind the wheel. As children are walking to school, or even jumping out of a vehicle in front of the school, they can put themselves at risk—and if you’re in a hurry, or aren’t paying close attention, that risk can become a reality.
Most of all, establish routines that will help your children and the whole family enjoy this fun transition—and stay safe and healthy.
